Raise your hand if you have a weird relationship with your curves. (Picture me jumping up and down enthusiastically.) I got my first “training bra” when I was 8 years old and have had hips since I hit puberty. I’ve written about my self-image struggles, but one of the things that has complicated my journey is that I’ve always had a large chest and butt with wide hips. Even when I was much skinnier, I felt disproportionate to the people around me.
Imagine my surprise when I realized how many people want to be built like me — I don’t mean that in a cocky way or think that people want my exact body, but learning that women strive for an hourglass figure was so strange for me because I’d always wanted to be leaner and more waifish. Reading about celebrities getting butt implants and going to great pains to look “thick” was surreal.
I’m still processing all of this and figuring out my relationship with my body, and when Shapermint reached out to me about a collaboration, I was unsure. Growing up, I used shapewear to flatten my chest and stomach and hips — I wore layers to hide them. My relationship with shaping undergarments was pretty simple: They were necessary evils to make myself look thinner.
But Shapermint encouraged me to learn about their company and their mission statement, and I realized that I could use their products to accentuate the body I was used to hiding. Their mission statement is, “We wear shapewear – LOUD and PROUD,” and I absolutely love it! Instead of me trying to make myself look smaller, I’m embracing my body — and making it look good, if I do say so myself!
I had the opportunity to try four different products from Shapermint, and I was so surprised at how comfortable they all were! Again, my experience with shapewear has been complicated, but it’s usually associated with a lot of discomfort. I was able to wear my shaping shorts for a full day of work and dinner afterward without a problem, which was so foreign to me.
I want to let y’all know more about each of the products I tried and what my thoughts were, so I’m sharing some intel on each individual project below!
Co’Coon Seamless Opaque Mid-Waist Basic Leggings – Size XL // Look, y’all. These leggings looked tiny when they came out of the package. Vagner even made a Zoolander joke and was like, “What are these? Leggings for ants?!” Thankfully, they stretch and look great on!
Co’Coon Inside-or-Outside Katia Shaping Cami – Size XL // While this cami is inside-or-out, I’ll probably only wear it under things. That being said, it does a great job of hiding my bra outline, which is always a concern I have when wearing a lacy bra!
Empetua High-Waisted Shaper Shorts – Size XL/XXL // I tried to not play favorites, but these were easily the winner from the items I got from Shapermint. They allowed me to not worry about panty lines or other clothing snafus and were easy to wear all day.
Empetua Ultra-Thin High-Waisted Shaper Panty – Size XL/XXL // Much like the shaping shorts, the panties are perfect for everyday wear. These are easier to wear under shorts and mini-dresses if you don’t want to show your shapewear. I only share products with y’all that I love myself, so I hope you find this helpful!
